Austria as a hunting destination

Austria is also known as the land of castles and palaces or the Alpine Republic. And not without reason, as a large part of the country is shaped by the Alps. This picturesque yet rugged mountain landscape provides a magnificent backdrop for hunting chamois, marmot, and even black grouse. The chamois hunt, in particular, draws many hunters to Austria every year. Hunting a mature chamois in the Alps is naturally a challenge, but the success makes you forget all the effort. Every hunter should also experience the courtship display of the black grouse at least once in their life. It is an unforgettable event when, in the early morning hours on the lekking grounds, the first black grouse begins his hissing and bubbling, and the cocks then carry out their courtship battles. With a total area of 83,878 km², Austria has a population of around 8.5 million. The country borders the Czech Republic and Germany to the north, Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west, Italy and Slovenia to the south, and Hungary and Slovakia to the east. The most important city is the capital, Vienna. About two-thirds of the country is dominated by the Alps, with the Großglockner (3,798 m) as the highest peak. In the east, along the Danube, lie the vast plains—predominantly the Alpine foothills and the Vienna Basin. With around 40% of its area forested, Austria is a very densely wooded country. Austria lies within the temperate zone, but exhibits different climate zones due to its topographical diversity. Roughly three climate zones can be identified: the east is dominated by a more continental climate with low precipitation, hotter summers, and moderately cold winters; an alpine, high-precipitation climate with short summers and long winters is found in the mountain regions; and the rest of the country experiences a transitional climate ranging from more oceanic in the west to continental in the south.
