Cape Buffalo

(Syncerus caffer)

The Cape buffalo inhabits a wide variety of environments, ranging from dense rainforests to open savannas. In mountainous regions, it can be found at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters. The largest populations occur in moist savannas that offer a year-round supply of drinking water, grasses, and densely vegetated retreat areas. Large, mature bulls can reach a shoulder height of 1.70 meters, a head-body length of 3.40 meters, and weights of up to 1,000 kilograms.

Cape Buffalo

Das Jagdgebiet

The Cape buffalo is one of the most sought-after big-game trophies in Southern Africa. Its legendary resilience to gunfire has earned it a reputation as the iconic game animal that epitomizes Africa like few others. While hunting it is possible almost everywhere in Southern Africa, Zimbabwe in particular boasts excellent populations and unbeatable value for money.

Die Jagd

The goal of most buffalo safaris is an old, mature bull with a well-developed "boss" (the hardened base of the horns) and long, deeply curved horns. Depending on the hunting area and the season, the bull must either be taken from a herd—small or large—or tracked and shot as a solitary animal or part of a small bachelor group (known as "dagga boys"). Hunting cow buffalo is also exceptionally exciting; these are almost always hunted from within the herd. Buffalo are relatively dependent on water and are therefore easier to locate during the dry season (starting in July). Stalking through elephant grass that stands several meters high—typically from March to June—is, of course, particularly challenging.

Any firearm you can handle safely and—if necessary—shoot quickly and offhand is suitable. Whether a double rifle or a bolt-action, calibers smaller than .375 are not recommended and are usually not permitted. The rifle should be equipped with a low-magnification scope (e.g., 1.5–6x), as buffalo often rest in deep shade, making them difficult to spot using open sights; furthermore, longer-range shots may be required in open terrain.

Ihre Unterkunft

During your stay, you will be accommodated in a well-appointed camp located right within the hunting area. Completed in 2013, the camp features three spacious safari tents with en-suite bathrooms, as well as the standard central dining area. Its unique location overlooking a riverbed and the excellent meals ensure you will quickly feel right at home. Unusually for Zimbabwe, the camp is connected to the local 220V power grid, despite its remote location.
