Wild water buffalo are now found only in small, isolated populations in Nepal, Bhutan, and a few states in India. However, following their introduction centuries ago, the Australian population in Arnhem Land in particular has developed into a viable, huntable population. The total population there is currently estimated at over 12,000 individuals.

Comparable in size to the African Cape buffalo, they can reach live weights between 700 kg and 1,000 kg. Both sexes carry wide-spreading horns that typically grow backward in a crescent shape. Trophies are scored using the SCI (Safari Club International) formula. Since this system is unfamiliar to most European hunters, the following horn lengths serve as a general guideline: a total spread between 40 inches and 45 inches (approx. 101 cm to 115 cm) is considered a good trophy, while top-tier trophies can exceed 50 inches (1.27 m).
