Brown Bear
Brown Bear

(Ursus arctos)

The brown bear is the largest terrestrial carnivore on Earth. Depending on the subspecies and habitat, it can reach live weights of up to 750 kg and a shoulder height of up to 150 cm. Its excellent sense of smell is particularly noteworthy. Brown bears have a life expectancy of up to 25 years (with female bears living up to one-third less). The various subspecies are native to Europe, Asia, Canada, and parts of North America. They are primarily solitary animals and are only found in groups during the mating season or when there is an overabundance of food (such as during salmon runs). During the winter months, they enter a period of winter dormancy in dens or hollowed-out tree trunks. The coastal brown bears of the Alaska Peninsula are among the largest brown bears in the world.
