Dall Sheep
Dall Sheep

(Ovis dalli)

The Dall sheep is one of the most sought-after wild sheep in the world. This unique sheep species is found exclusively in mountain ranges across Alaska and northwestern Canada. They can reach live weights of up to 120 kg with shoulder heights of up to 100 cm. The ewes live in groups together with their lambs, while rams form their own bachelor bands and only join the ewes during the rut. Both sexes carry horns. The horns of the ewes are thin and sweep backward, whereas the horns of the rams flare outward into spirals that can exceed one meter in length. Another striking feature is their pure white coat. Rams may only be harvested once they achieve a "full curl"—meaning that when viewed from the side, the horn tips reach back up to the base. At this stage, they generally have a length starting at 36 inches (approx. 91 cm). The most exceptional trophies can even exceed 40 inches. Dall sheep are highly agile climbers and possess excellent eyesight.
