The quail is the smallest gallinaceous bird in Europe. It reaches sizes up to 20 cm and is very secretive. The quail's distribution range extends across almost all of Europe, the western part of Asia, and a large part of Africa. They are distinct migratory birds. The majority of the population winters in Africa south of the equatorial forests, in Sudan, Egypt, and India. The preferred habitat consists of open fields and meadows with high cover. A striking feature is the typical quail call ("quail dactylic"), which can be heard from far away.
