(Hydropotes inermis)

The Chinese water deer (Hydropotes inermis) is a deer species originally native to East Asia. It can reach live weights of up to 14 kg and is roughly the size of a roe deer fawn. Chinese water deer are one of the few deer species that do not grow antlers. Instead, their upper canine teeth are elongated into tusks, making for an extraordinary trophy. As a game species that lives close to water, water deer are strong swimmers. When fleeing, they frequently head toward water; they are also capable of crossing larger bodies of water and therefore even colonize islands in major freshwater lakes. In England, both the Chinese water deer and the muntjac were released into the wild at the beginning of the 20th century by the Duke of Bedford and have since spread.

The muntjac (Muntiacus), like the Chinese water deer, is a deer species originally native to Asia. It reaches live weights of up to 15 kg with a shoulder height of up to 50 cm. Characteristic features include the short antlers of the bucks, which grow from two hairy pedicles, and the elongated canine teeth of the upper jaw. Muntjacs are generally solitary animals with territorial behavior.
