The Iberian ibex is nowadays only native to Spain and was nearly extinct 200 years ago. Thanks to intensive management and strict hunting regulations, however, populations have since recovered remarkably well. Depending on the subspecies, these ibexes can reach live weights of up to 80 kg and shoulder heights of up to 80 cm. Females can live up to 20 years, while males rarely exceed 15 years. Unlike other ibex species, the males reach sexual maturity quite late, at 4 years of age. Their preferred habitat consists of rocky high-mountain regions between 500 m and 3,000 m below the snow line. Females and males only come together during the rut; otherwise, they live separated by sex.
