The red-legged partridge is roughly the size of a grey partridge and belongs to the pheasant family. It closely resembles the rock partridge. Distinctive features include the bright red coloration of the bill and the legs. When flushing, its vibrant, fiery-red tail feathers also become visible.

Today, it is primarily found on the Iberian Peninsula, in southern France, and in northwestern Italy. Red-legged partridges are ground nesters and live in family groups (known as coveys). Their diet consists mainly of insects, grain seeds, buds, and the leaf tips of herbs.
