With a total area of 824,116 km², Namibia has around 2.1 million inhabitants, making it extremely sparsely populated. It borders Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana and Zimbabwe to the east, South Africa to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. By far the most important and populous city is the capital, Windhoek, in the center of the country. In terms of landscape, Namibia is essentially shaped by two deserts: in the west, the Namib, which stretches from the South African province of Northern Cape far into Angola, and in the east, the Kalahari. Situated between the two deserts is the central plateau, which averages 1,700 meters in elevation and exceeds the 2,000-meter mark around the capital of Windhoek. To the east, the central plateau gradually transitions into the Kalahari Highlands, which sit at around 1,200 meters and are covered with arid vegetation. In the northeast of the country lies the more tropical and highly game-rich Caprivi Strip, a finger of land about 450 km long wedged between Angola, Zambia, and Botswana.
