Our partner Robin Hurt’s fifty years of experience in Tanzania and his extensive knowledge of the wilderness areas have been instrumental in securing some of the country’s most game-rich hunting grounds. For the past 20 years, these areas have been managed under the leadership and direction of the Hurt family. We can proudly state that these four hunting areas offer hunters the greatest diversity of species in Tanzania. In addition to the "Big Four" (elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard), the Selous offers the opportunity to hunt a wide range of other fascinating species. These include large antelopes such as Livingstone’s eland, Roosevelt sable, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, as well as suni and bushbuck. The list of huntable game also includes crocodile, hippopotamus, spotted hyena, and warthog.

In the Selous, the hunting season runs from July until roughly mid-November. From then on, rain is to be expected, rendering the hunting areas inaccessible and unsuitable for hunting until the end of June.

In addition to standard African hunting gear, special attention should be paid to bringing lightweight, broken-in footwear and seamless socks made from modern synthetic fibers. Cotton tends to get damp quickly, and in high temperatures, this causes the feet to soften. It is best to bring two pairs of ankle-high boots, as tracking game can easily result in covering several miles on foot. The old adage applies here: for every pound of ivory, the hunter must walk a mile! As for the choice of firearm, there is, of course, the never-ending debate between double rifles and bolt-action rifles. For those proficient with open sights or a red-dot sight, a double rifle—ideally in .450/.470 NE or larger—is a solid choice; for bolt-action rifles, suitable calibers start at .416 Rigby. In any case, the hunter must be comfortable shooting the chosen caliber and capable of hitting a large beer coaster at fifty meters while shooting offhand.
