This is not for the first-time visitor to Africa, nor for the hunter who demands a five-star hotel after a strenuous stalk. However, for those who do not shy away from hardship—and who can maintain their good spirits even after a day without spotting any game—this is the perfect destination. A hunt in the rainforest, guided by Pygmies, in pursuit of arguably Africa’s most beautiful antelope is an experience you are unlikely ever to forget. This is a challenge for the specialist—for the hunter in the truest sense of the word. For years, we have collaborated with arguably the most knowledgeable expert on Cameroon. Only a handful of guests make their way to this West African nation each year, yet every single one has returned satisfied.

The hunting season in the rainforest runs from December until the end of July. If you are specifically targeting Bongo, we recommend the period between March and July, as silent stalking is only possible during the rainy season. Bongo hunting with local trackers takes place almost exclusively by stalking. Bongo are frequently on the move following a downpour or during periods of steady rain. Once a fresh and promising track has been located, the trackers—usually Pygmies—begin their impressive work, following the trail through the dense rainforest. The dogs are released as soon as the hunting party is in close proximity to the Bongo. At that point, speed is of the essence—even with the aid of dogs, a trophy Bongo bull cannot be held at bay for very long.

For rainforest hunting, we recommend robust bolt-action rifles or double rifles chambered in powerful calibers such as .375 H&H Magnum, .416 Rigby, or .458 Winchester, loaded with soft-point bullets (Swift-A-Frame bullets have proven particularly effective). Your telescopic sight should be variable and capable of being dialed down to a magnification of 1.5x to 2x. If you feel confident in your abilities and have practiced beforehand, shooting with open sights (iron sights) offers a distinct advantage.
