Ezulu Game Reserve

South Africa

The Eastern Cape is legendary and enjoys great cultural and historical significance: there are stories about Xhosa kings, the first settlers, cultural conflicts and border battles. As the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, the province also played a major role as a driving force for the fight against apartheid and for democracy in Africa.

In the heart of this dreamlike region are the areas of our partner eZulu with a total size of almost 60,000 hectares. The largest hunting area of 30,000 hectares - the so-called Bush Area - is about 1.5 hours drive from Grahamstown. This large area with extensive and flat grasslands as well as large thick bush areas in hilly terrain is home to over 25 game species and at the same time one of the largest populations of Cape buffalo, kudu, oryx, impala, springbok, waterbuck and especially warthogss on the Eastern Cape. The total game population is estimated to be well over 5,000 animals. Apart from the hunt for old mature trophies, culling hunts for different game species take place here at the same time, primarily in March/April. Especially the constantly growing warthog population is hunted intensively.

The hunt

After a short breakfast, the first stalking tour with the professional hunter and the tracker starts in the early morning hours. First of all, you drive to exposed points to observe and glass the area extensively. When game comes into sight, you stalk by taking advantage of every cover and the wind. After another late breakfast or lunch, the stalking continues in the afternoon. The evening ends with a delicious dinner on the veranda or by the fire in the lodge.

Accommodation and activities

The area of the 5 star lodge Salisbury Plain comprises 3 bungalows. Within the main lodge there are 3 more rooms available. This lodge and the bungalows leave nothing to be desired and the spacious grounds provide enough room for a high level of privacy. Plash pools and a terrace in front of each bungalow, a large swimming pool and a bar area as well as the fantastic interiors complete the overall picture.

The Ezulu Tented Camp radiates tranquility and originality, qualities that all African hunters dream of. Three massive tents are available, each with underfloor heating, as well as a spacious bathroom area including shower, bathtub and two washbasins. A large terrace with fireplace at the main lodge invites you to relax after a strenuous day of hunting. Depending on the weather and the time of day, meals are served in the lodge, on the terrace or in the tent.

Zingela Lodge is a typical hunting lodge in the eastern part of the reserve. If required, 2 double and 2 single rooms are available. There are also 4 bungalows near the main lodge. A marvellous roof terrace with a wide view lets the senses wander and the pool always invites you to cool down. In the evening you can meet at the rustic, cosy bar and enjoy your hunting experiences with a gin and tonic. You will be amazed.

The Mountain Area (with approximately 30,000 hectares of mountain scenery) is not far from Tarkastad, about 2 hours drive from the Bush Area. This mountain reserve in the Great Karoo offers incredible views and breathtaking scenery. Embedded in the well-known winter mountains, which are up to 2,300 metres high, the mountain hunter will get his money's worth here. For those who love mountain hunting, to hunt downhill from the summit or to observe the African wildlife in the slopes, this game reserve is the first choice.

It is not uncommon for mountain buffalo hunting to take place in the snow , which is an incredible attraction. Large herds of wildebeest, springbok, eland, oryx, blesbuck, mountain reedbuck, hartebeest or waterbuck evoke great enthusiasm in most hunters. The occurrence of Vaal roebuck, ibex, duiker or mountain reedbuck attracts numerous hunters every year, who have mainly focused on the smaller antelopes. 20 African game species are hunted sustainably.

The Bouwers Hope Lodge has served as the family headquarters since 1820 and has a spacious hunting room, a large bar area and 3 double rooms to offer. Terrace and swimming pool are of course available. Both bungalows, each with two double rooms, have underfloor heating. Family Price is known for their hospitality and all guests have felt optimally cared so far. Since the family built the highest dam in South Africa years ago, anglers also get their money's worth. Trouts in particular can be fished excellently at an altitude of over 1,000 metres above sea level.

On the Indian Ocean, not far from the village of Kleinemonde, is the third reserve located, the so-called Coastal Area. Directly behind Putti River Lodge lies this thick bush reserve with the main game species Nyala and bushbucks, which feel very well in this biotope. Hunting in the thick bush is a real challenge, as you hunt stalking on short distances. 18 different game species are found. From the lodge, which is surrounded by the beautiful South African landscape, the guests can enjoy a fantastic view of the Indian Ocean. Boat and fishing tours or golf on the nearby Royal Port Alfred Golf Course provide plenty of variety.

Horseback rides on the beaches of the Sunshine Coast complete your holiday. And for those who have even a little more time, it is worth taking the Garden Route to Cape Town. We will be happy to arrange appropriate accommodation for you along the Garden Route. Within one hunting trip we can offer 3 different safaris types! From classic hunting in the plains and thick bush, to challenging and fascinating mountain hunting in the winter mountains or a relaxing combination of hunting and fishing in the coastal reserve, we can offer you everything. Our hunting areas are ideal for family holidays, group travel or individual hunters.

To be able to experience the beautiful and versatile Eastern Cape in one trip, organized by an agency, is a great advantage. We offer you a tailor-made trip that leaves nothing to be desired. If you wish total privacy, then 2 beach houses are available in Kleinemonde, directly at the Sunshine Coast overlooking the sea. Each of them has 3 double rooms or 2 single rooms. The beach houses can also be rented over a longer period, for example in the African summer at Christmas time. We offer full board, but you can also rent only the houses with self-catering.
