Wild boar Bulgaria

Bulgaria's strongest boars can be found in the remote mountain regions. The hunting pressure here is extremely low so that the boars can become old and mature. Hunting with a good moon during the winter months in the snow-covered heights is always a special experience. The memory of shooting your old tusker in this impressive surrounding will be with you for a long time..

Informations about wild boar (Sus scrofa)

The wild boar belongs to the family of the real pigs. Due to the very high adaptability, it is widespread from all over Europe to Southeast Asia. Furthermore, there are also larger populations in North Africa, making wild boar one of the most widespread game species in the world. The intensification of agriculture has contributed to the high distribution and population of wild boar.

Depending on the habitat, live weights of up to 350 kg can be achieved at shoulder heights of up to 120 cm.

The wild boar has a pronounced social behavior and lives in small to big sounders, usually consisting of several sows and their offspring. Older wild boars are usually loners and only look for the proximity of the sows during the rutting time.

High intelligence and a good sense of smell and hearing always make hunting for wild boar a challenge. That's what makes it so attractive.

In Bulgaria the Balkan wild boar (Sus scrofa reiseri) is hunted. The country is known for huge boars and the proportion of gold medal tuskers is very high by international standards.

Hunting season/hunting method

You have the best chances for this hunt in the winter months with a good moon. Due to the snow, which lies in this season in the mountain regions, the boars are well to spot.

You will hunt under the guidance of an experienced wild boar expert in the night from a high seat.

The equipment does not have any special requirements for this hunt. Since you hunt here in the mountain regions (Rhodope Mountains or Balkan Mountains), you should always wear well-worn, ankle-stabilizing footwear and winter-proof clothing. In addition, you should also use powerful binoculars and riflescope, as you hunt at night. You can use all common calibres from 7 mm and higher.

During your stay you will live in well-developed hunting lodges within the hunting district, which are usually comfortably equipped. The sanitary facilities meet western standards and the food is of good quality. In Bulgaria, even the more demanding hunters will find accommodation that should meet their requirements.
