Fallow deer Bulgaria

Bulgaria

Large forests mixed with open areas characterize the slightly hilly landscape in the 20,000-hectare hunting area of Ropotamo in the very east of Bulgaria. Here you can still find excellent populations of fallow deer and therefore also a busy rutting season. Hunting the rutting deer is an exciting experience and the show at the mating place and the rank fights of the strong deer will surely remain in your memory for a long time.

Informations about fallow deer (Dama dama)

The ancestral fallow deer, the Mesopotamian fallow deer (Dama dama mesopotamica), originates from Iran. In Europe (Dama dama dama) it was originally native to Greece, but was brought to other European countries very early by the Romans.

Fallow deer is a medium sized species of real deer. It can reach shoulder heights of up to 110 cm with weights of up to 120 kg.

Old deer are usually loners, otherwise fallow deer live in herds separated by sex. This diurnal game is not particularly territory-loyal and rather insensitive to disturbances. During the rut, the herds of females moove to the rutting grounds. The strongest deer claim their rutting wallows there and wait for the females.

Fallow deer has better eyes than most other hoofed game species, but the hearing is worse.

The summer skin is reddish brown with white spots and a black dorsal stripe, the winter skin is darker and without spots. White and black animals are also occasionally found.

The fallow deer in Ropotamo reach an antler weight of about 3.5 kg on average.

Hunting method/hunting season

The rut of fallow deer begins in Bulgaria in mid-October, and this is also the best time for this hunt. On top of that it is a remarkable natural spectacle.

Hunting is done from a raised hide. Under the guidance of an experienced fallow deer hunter you will follow the rut and wait for a suitable stag.

Equipment

The equipment does not have any special requirements for this hunt. The clothes should be adapted to the season, it is best to bring a set of a little warmer and a set of lighter clothing with you. It can be warm as summer or cool as autumn. In addition, you should of course take good binoculars with 8x or higher magnification, to be able to spot the deer correctly. For the calibers you can use all common sizes from 7 mm and higher.

Accomodation

During your stay you will live in well-developed hunting lodges within the hunting district, which are usually comfortably equipped. The sanitary facilities meet western standards and the food is of good quality. In Bulgaria, even the more demanding hunters will find accommodation that should meet their requirements.
