Tanzania - formerly Tanganijka - is a state in East Africa on the Indian Ocean and borders Kenya, Uganda, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Almost 41 million people live on a land area of ??945,087 square kilometers. The capital is Dodoma, but the seat of government and the largest city in the country is Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has been independent since December 9, 1961 and has been a member of the Commenwealth of Nations since that time. Geographically, Tanzania is divided into three parts: a narrow coastal strip with tropical climate, the Massai savanna in the north and a high plateau in the south of the country.
