Informations Lord Derby Eland (Taurotragus Derbianus)

The habitat of Lord Derby Eland is the savannahs and open forests of Cameroon, the Central African Republic and southern Sudan. It is the largest antelope in the world with a shoulder height of about 1.50 m and live weights of almost one ton. Both sexes wear horns.

Hunting / Season

The hunt in the savannah is usually organized as a stalking hunt. Follow the tracks. At dawn, the camp is left with off-road vehicles and you will start looking for fresh tracks. Experienced professional hunters and local trackers can judge age, sex and how old is the track. Based on this information, the decision is made whether to follow the track or not.
The best hunting season in northern Cameroon begins in December and extends to mid-May. During this period, the climate is determined by cool nights. Temperatures are 10 degrees in January and 18 degrees in early April. During the day, the temperatures rise to 25 degrees with peaks to over 30 degrees. The relative humidity is low from January to March. From April it rises again.

For hunting in the savannah, we recommend rugged repeaters or double rifles in powerful calibers such as .375 H & H Magnum, .416 Rigby or .458 Winchester with soft point bullets (Swift-A-Frame projectiles have proved their worth). The scope should be variable, twilight performance is not crucial, as is hunted exclusively on the day. The shooting distances, in particular on Lord Derby Eland, are generally between 100 m and 150 m. Especially for Cameroon we have put prepared a checklist.

The camp consists of stone buildings, so-called 'Boukarous'. They are cool, calm and well adapted to the environment. Each hunter has his own Boukarous with single or double bed. There is a shower, toilet and sink. Light is generated by solar power. Refrigerators and freezers work with gas. There is a daily laundry service. Satellite phone is available.
