Originally from East Asia, sika deer after releasing is now represented in many parts of the world (Europe, East Asia, North America, Madagascar and Australia).
The Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon nippon), which you can find in Ireland, was released in the middle of the 19th century. Live weights of up to 70 kg can be reached.
The Sika deer is very territory loyal. In summer they form small family-herds, in winter they gather also in bigger herds with young deer. The older deer are usually loners. During the rut (in Europe beginning of October until end of November) the stags move to the hinds.
The trophy strength ofsika deer lies between roe and fallow deer and usually tehy reach 8 to 10 points. The summer coat is similar to fallow deer, but a bit more brownish, whereas the winter skin is dark brown to almost black.
Sika deer is blessed with excellent hearing, sense of smell and eyesight.
