The Rusa deer reaches 80 to 100 kilograms live-weight with an average withers-height of approx. 110 centimeters and a length of approx. 150 centimeters. Preferred habitats are open grass- and parklandscapes with sufficient swamp-parts, undergrowth and trees as coverage. Rusa deer have excellent eyes, nose and ears. These characteristics make hunting a challenge.
Females with calves often live sociably in herds. The stags are loners or stand together in smaller groups. During the rut (June until August), the Rusa stag is particularly aggressive. Calves are born after a gestation period of seven to eight months.
The summer skin is short-haired and reddish brown in colour, in winter it has a grey-brown colour. Only the males carry clumsy and strongly pearled antlers with maximum six points. An important characteristic is that the brow tine and beam grow out of the pedicle. The stags carry an imposing mane.
